Pulp

Soft tissue at the center of the tooth where nerves and blood vessels gather, commonly called the 'tooth nerve'.

It supplies nutrients to the tooth and senses pain and temperature. When a cavity deepens and infects the pulp, severe pain occurs, and at that point root canal treatment (endodontic treatment) is needed.
